Denim & DINING...A Community Hub Forged from Local History

The Challenge:

A group of friends and investors from Woodstock, VA—the hometown of our firm's owner—came to us with an exciting vision and a significant challenge. They had acquired a historic 1920s denim factory, a landmark in the town, and dreamed of transforming it into a vibrant, contemporary brewhouse and community event space. The challenge was immense: to navigate complex zoning, fire safety, and historic preservation requirements while integrating a full-scale brewing operation, a commercial kitchen, and an inviting taproom into the raw, industrial shell of the factory.

The FADE Approach:

This project was a journey back to our roots, demanding a fast-track, highly collaborative process. As Architects, we developed a design concept that celebrated the building's industrial past while inserting a modern, functional program. A key design move was to purposefully expose the brewing equipment—the massive stainless steel tanks and mechanical systems—making the craft of brewing an integral and educational part of the patron experience. This required a deep dive into the technical needs of a production brewery, blending them seamlessly with the hospitality requirements of a large event hall. Our Development mindset helped guide the clients through the critical early phases of feasibility, zoning, and code compliance, ensuring the project was viable from day one.

The Outcome:

The Woodstock Brewhouse is now the thriving heart of the town. The final space is a testament to the power of adaptive reuse, preserving a piece of local history while creating a vital new gathering place. The main hall, with its warm wood and industrial accents, is a welcoming space for patrons to enjoy a meal, listen to live music, and connect with the craft of brewing. The project successfully balances the complex demands of production and public assembly, creating a beloved local institution and a model for community-driven development.

We have the expertise to combine architecture and development to transform historic landmarks into viable commercial spaces.

Let's begin the design process for your space.
