SUN & SHADE...Revitalizing a Cape May Gem

The Challenge:

Our client's goal was to restore and elevate a beloved beach cottage in the heart of Cape May's Historic District. However, the project faced significant challenges. Beyond navigating a complex variance process, an initial inspection revealed numerous issues, including siding damage, a failing roof, and significant water infiltration in the crawlspace that needed to be addressed. The ultimate challenge was to thoughtfully blend modern, resilient performance with the home's historic character.

The FADE Approach:

Our journey began with a deep dive into the regulatory landscape. As both Architects and expert witnesses, we successfully navigated the variance process, securing full approval for a design that melds tradition with innovation. Our architectural solution is a comprehensive overhaul "down to the studs," featuring a new metal roof for longevity, cedar shake siding with modern cavity wall construction for durability, and an expanded wrap-around porch to enhance outdoor living. A key driver of the design is enhancing the home's resilience. To combat the water issues, our plan incorporates robust water management features and a protective buffer around the foundation to create a sustainable and healthy home.

The Outcome:

With all variances approved without compromise, this project is now poised for construction. The outcome will be the complete revitalization of a Cape May gem. By addressing the home's underlying deficiencies and thoughtfully enhancing its functionality and aesthetic, we are creating a home that not only preserves its historic essence but is also equipped for a resilient, sustainable future.
