Modern Living in a Historic Context
The Challenge:
Our clients came to us with a fascinating challenge: how to thoughtfully renovate and expand their historic home in the heart of Georgetown to better suit their modern lifes style. The project required a delicate balancing act—meeting all the client's needs and budget while navigating the rigorous approval process of one of the nation's most stringent historic boards ing the Commision of Fine Arts
The FADE Approach:
Our journey with the client was a design-build collaboration from start to finish. As Architects, we developed a comprehensive plan that included a basement dig-out and a standout, partially sunken rear addition where an old sleeping porch once stood. A key move was completely reallocating the home's central stair to create a more functional and open circulation path. The Fabrication and problem-solving aspect of our FADE process was essential. We designed and colloborated with Gutierrez Studio on the custom main stair that defies physics and defines style.
The Outcome:
The result is a fully custom home that seamlessly blends historic character with contemporary functionality. We successfully guided the project through every phase, from historic approvals to hands-on construction administration, ensuring the finished product was realized with the same care in which it was designed. The thoughtfully integrated addition and reconfigured interior have transformed the way the family lives in the space, creating a light-filled, highly personalized home that respects its past while fully embracing the future.
