AUXILIARY & ARTISTRY...A Machine for Making Art
The Challenge:
Renowned machinist sculptor Chris Bathgate approached us with a unique and exciting challenge: to design a new, ground-up studio and workshop in Baltimore. The project required more than just a building; it needed to be a high-performance machine for making art, designed to house heavy, precision equipment while providing a clean, inspiring space for creative work. Furthermore, the design had to navigate a complex zoning and variance process to be realized.
The FADE Approach:
This project perfectly embodies our FADE mission. Our journey began with a deep dive into the Development process, meticulously preparing and presenting the architectural plans to the zoning board to secure the necessary variances for the project to proceed. As Architects, our design marries the artistic vision of the client with the hard science of construction. The two-story structure features a robust ground-floor workshop for heavy machinery and a clean, light-filled office and assembly space on the second floor. Our detailed permit set and construction consultancy guided the project through the Fabrication phase, ensuring that each detail retains intentional but allows the client to finish out the space on their own timeframe.
The Outcome:
Currently rising from the ground, the Bathgate Artist Studio is on its way to becoming a landmark for the Baltimore arts community. The result will be a space that is both a highly functional workshop and a beautiful piece of architecture in its own right—a direct reflection of the artist it serves. It’s a testament to a process that successfully fuses artistic vision with rigorous architectural design and a deep understanding of the development process.
