The Spark: 

The idea for this staircase was born from a single, simple concept: a continuous ribbon of steel, folded and perforated, flowing through the center of a historic Baltimore row home lighting the material and allowing light to engage on a illusionary level. We envisioned a piece that was not just a means of vertical circulation, but the sculptural and spiritual heart of the home—an object that would command attention and play with light.

From Digital to Dust: 

The journey to create this ribbon of steel was a true marriage of digital precision and industrial craft, a perfect example of our Fabrication philosophy. The entire stair, from its complex folds to the organic, flowing pattern of the perforations, was first modeled in our 3D software. This digital blueprint was then sent to a laser cutter, which precisely carved the intricate patterns out of massive sheets of raw steel. This process allowed us to create a design that would be impossible to achieve by hand.

The Human Touch: 

Once the steel was cut, the true craft began. The heavy steel plates were carefully bent, welded, and finished by hand, transforming them from flat sheets into a dynamic, three-dimensional form. The installation was a feat of engineering and brute force, carefully maneuvering the massive sections into the tight confines of the rowhome. The final piece is not just an assembly of parts; it is a single, monolithic sculpture, a testament to the skill of the fabricators who brought the digital design to life.

The finished staircase is the undeniable centerpiece of the home. The precisely cut perforations cast intricate, shifting patterns of light and shadow throughout the day, bringing the industrial material to life. It is a powerful example of our FADE process in action, where a bold Architectural concept is realized through a deep and hands-on engagement with the Fabrication process, resulting in a piece that is both a functional staircase and a powerful work of art.
