WAREHOUSE & YOUR HOUSE...A Prototype for Urban Family Mobility

The Spark:

It started with a personal challenge: how can a young family move through Baltimore City with joy and ease, without always resorting to a car? The answer, I felt, had to be on two (or three) wheels. The spark for this project wasn't a client brief, but a discovery—a rusty, forgotten 1979 Workmen Industrial Tricycle, found on the roof of a collector in Curtis Bay. It was a piece of Baltimore's industrial past, and I saw in its sturdy frame the potential for a new future.

From Digital to Dust:

The vision was to transform this workhorse into a safe, elegant, and fun vehicle for my two daughters, Magnolia & Cora. This became a true Fabrication project, a dialogue between old steel and new technology. I designed a custom child seat and cargo box in our 3D software, engineering it with precise finger joints so it could be assembled without a single screw. We then milled the pieces from a highly durable and weather-resistant MDF on our CNC machine. Every detail was considered, from custom-machining new bike components to ensuring the geometry of the box would protect its precious cargo in the unlikely event of a rollover.

The Human Touch:

The final assembly was a labor of love. The precisely milled joints of the box fit together like a perfect puzzle. We took the custom seat to a local upholstery shop to have it wrapped in durable, comfortable sunscreen fabric. This wasn't just about building a product; it was about craft, community, and creating something with care and intention.

The Lasting Impression:

The "Maggie Waggie," named for my eldest daughter, is more than a prototype; it's a part of our daily life. It's our ride to school, our grocery-getter, and our ticket to exploring the city's parks and Camden Yards. It has proven that with thoughtful design and hands-on fabrication, we can create new, sustainable, and joyful ways to navigate our world. It's a rolling testament to the idea that the best projects are often the most personal.
